Launched in 2012 by former Apple engineers Thiru Arunachalam (CEO) and Bala Krishnan (CPO/Chief Product Officer), Peel is a free smart TV remote app that turns your smartphone or tablet into a smart universal remote.

What initially started as a hardware-based entity, with an external IR blaster that connected iPhones to TVs, Peel convinced Samsung to build its IR blaster into their phones, showing a shift from iOS to Android. Peel now reaches consumers in more than 200 countries worldwide.

According to Peel, it now has 100 million users worldwide for its Android and iOS apps and generates 8 billion remote commands a month.

“Peel joined the 100 million user club in October, a milestone it reached faster than all but a handful of highly successful communication apps such as Line and Instagram. Peel’s users can be found in more than 200 countries worldwide and are among the stickiest of any app. More than 30% of North American users, for example, are active every day. A big thank you to our partners, investors, friends and users for their integral role in helping us achieve this important milestone.”

In July, Peel launched the Peel.in Platform to let TV networks promote tune-in to their shows via Twitter and Facebook; the feature has been used by HBO, Showtime and Sundance TV. The company also sells tune-in ads for the app to networks, which lets users tap the ad to change the channel, with clients including History, FXX and National Geographic.

Furthermore, Peel CEO Thiru Arunachalam has received the rare honor of being among a handful of CEOs chosen to deliver a keynote speech at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona.
