BBC iPlayer international to launch on iPad first
07 Dec 2010
Luke Bradley Jones, EVP and MD BBC.com, spoke last week at the Digital TV Summit about the iPlayer's international launch.
He noted that the service will launch sometime in 2011 and will do so first on the iPad and will be a paid subscription service. The service may move to a mixed model (i.e. free and paid) in the medium term, however would be 100% paid for at launch. Viewers will be able to sample content, with advertising attached, but full episodes will carry a fee. Exact details of launch date, subscription costs and launch territories were not given.
We very much believe that the service will be PC based for the short to medium term and this is where the BBC will concentrate their efforts. They will also be careful not to risk their channel business - especially in territories such as Poland where they have invested heavily in developing strong relationships with platforms in recent years.
